Our new identity papers were delivered under cover of the Hofbraeuhaus, the Wiesn-App had helped to locate us. We quickly consumed our new identities as Bierleichen.
Like many of the other refugees, with our few remaining possessions and a commemorative stein in one small cardboard suitcase, we made our way to the hauptbahnhoff where the last train was departing.
We knew we were not free yet; at the border the guards took their time looking at our papers. ‘Polite Aussie?’ was the only comment as they glanced from our passports to the Oktoberfest 2010 t-shirts.
